I dared to be different.

Exactly a year ago I dared to be different by launching a brand new consultancy company. The vision for Merlin Digital Consulting Ltd was to bring the latest technology innovations & digital thinking to the critically important insurance industry – for everyone’s benefit. In April, I was joined by Sue Collins as my PA and then in October by Karen Foreman (ex-Ageas) as our Senior Consultant. I am so pleased to say that in the last 12 months we have had the privilege of helping many incumbent insurers, InsurTech start ups and technology companies from across the world (literally!) – UK, Europe, Nordics, Australia and the US. With every company facing very similar challenges and of course opportunities to grow, the winning approaches we saw included; absolute customer centricity, business and IT agility, seeing digital disruption as a positive opportunity, trialling new ideas quickly and cheaply, using timely rich data with AI to “surprise and delight the customer” and, crucially, embracing the learning at every stage. Our first year of helping companies grow has been very engaging, highly motivating and, importantly, great fun!

There are some excellent predictions for 2018 on Linked In at the moment. I will simply comment that every insurance company, intermediary, vendor etc.. will face increasing levels of change and those that embrace this as a positive opportunity and dare to be different will flourish.

So, a huge thank you everyone – our customers, partners, associates and of course many friends. As a very good friend said to me in Israel, “business is personal” and, of all Merlin’s achievements, I rate the brilliant network of friendships as our greatest.

Happy New Year to you all and may 2018 be everything you wish it to be… and be different, I dare you!

Disruptive Technologies in Insurance Conference in Johannesburg

Privileged to be the key note speaker at the Disruptive Technologies in Insurance Conference in Johannesburg today – great event by Vukani Communications – with lots of insightful discussion about understanding technology disruption but importantly also how to best navigate this as an insurer/broker. Lots of great innovations and InsurTech start ups covered today, such as DMWay.com, Floodflash, VisionTrack, Neos, Flock, StreamCentral and even the just announced Tesla Semi truck. So much going on !

The Future of General Insurance is amazing…

The Future of General Insurance conference is happening in London, 7-8 November and I will be with the Sapiens team to discuss their enhanced general insurance offering.

This year’s event promises to have a broader collection of insurance innovators than ever before. If you are among the 400+ speakers and delegates from all over Europe that will be in attendance, come over and grab me at booth #7.

As I chair the Sapiens P & C User Group, I am very pleased that Sapiens have really listened and been busy enhancing their general insurance platform. The Sapiens IDIT suite now features; elasticsearch capabilities; a pre-integrated, full digital suite with customer and agent portals; embedded DevOps and more. I particularly like the new GDPR functionality (closely teamworked with many Sapiens clients).

InsurTECH Europe conference in London

Excellent day at the Intelligent InsurTECH Europe conference in London – speaking on the need for more agile data analytics capabilities and less reliance on scarce Data Scientists. Great interview with Karen Foreman on the practical lessons on using data to drive the right business outcomes. Well done to Elsa Costa, MBA and team at the Intelligent Insurer for hosting a very informative and thought provoking event.

“Stopping the bad stuff from happening” – The future of Insurance with IOT Smart H​

​Over the last two days I attended the Smart Summit in London. When I saw what was on the near horizon for the Smart Home, I remembered my recent ride in a Tesla – a real paradigm shift in customer experience, especially when the self drive button was pressed ! Tesla is here and now, the connected home is fast approaching – both have radical implications.
